Review: Captain America: First Avenger
Yesterday Steve Gaynor and I went to see Captain America: First Avenger. First of all, it was in 3D so the chinese subtitles looked like they were coming right at us. There was also other cool 3D parts too but they became less impressive as the movie went on.
It’s okay that Steve Gaynor isn’t American because either am I but we were all on the same side of WWII which is the setting of this film. Also, Captain America’s real name is Steve so Gaynor was cool with that. Here’s a quick synopsis of the film:
Steve Rogers is a tiny, but tough American in World War II. He wants to join the war but he’s too small. He loves America and hates Germans so he tries over and over. Eventually some German scientist on Team America picks him for an experimental procedure to make him big and strong. It works but the German did it too. Introduce Red Skull, the enemy who has drank the serum and intends to take over the world. Basically, nobody takes Captain America seriously until he does some cool, brave shit. He saves the day and the movie ends with him being a presumably dead hero. There’s a sweet epilogue where he wakes up and it’s 70 years in the future and he’s in NYC. I guess this sets up the next movies.
There may be several holes in the above plot summary because I was texting friends back in Canada quite a bit during this movie. Back to the review…
You might think that it’s kind of bullshit to release some ra-ra America movie at the ten-year memorial of 9/11 but it was a WWII Nazi plot rather than a War of Terrorism plot and it was mostly a Captain America vs. Red Skull thing anyway.
Captain America: First Avenger is definitely a set up for the rest of the franchise. There wasn’t really a major battle between him and Red Skull and a lot of the ‘becoming Captain America’ shit got a bit boring.
I was a bit disappointed in Captain America, the superhero. Sure he’s strong and can run fast and all but his only weapon is fighting and his shield. It’s really too bad that he can’t fly.
As far as comic book movies/Hollywood blockbusters go, this movie was pretty good. I would recommend it to people who like comic books or like America. I’m sure Steve Gaynor said he liked it but I can’t remember exactly what he said.
Rating: 40 stars out of 50.
